Kent Tate
Kent Tate is a Canadian artist whose current art practice focuses on creating single-channel movies and multi-channel video/sculpture installations. == Career == Born in Rivers, Manitoba, Tate spent his childhood in Germany and then in Ottawa. At the age of 14 Tate's father died, and two years later he moved to the United States with his mother, and went on to study painting and film at the University of Utah. Tate settled in Toronto after returning to Canada in 1980 and began an active period of exhibiting paintings, films, and music.〔 Tate's career has included a broad spectrum of styles and media, experimenting with performance art, performance installation, and creating a Super 8 epic,''"Vanishing Heat"''. During the tour of (''"Vanishing Heat"'' ) the only print was stolen in Seattle. Tate then moved to western Canada, where he continued to exhibit installations in Vancouver and Victoria throughout the 1980s. Tate having adopted a type of Arte Povera sensibility to his work, used materials such as salt, sulphur, wax, copper, water, crude oil, house dust and electricity in his installations from 1984 to 1988. In ''The Stalker'', Tate used salt, soils, wax, copper, oil and electricity. In 1992 Tate visited the island of Hawaii, motivating him to move there. He lived near Volcano Village, just outside of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park until 2005. It was during this time that Tate produced his movie ''The Birthing Earth''〔 Since returning to Canada in 2005, Tate's work has been shown in national and international film and new media festivals, symposiums, group screenings - exhibitions, and solo gallery installations. In his career, Tate has received residencies from The Banff Centre, Alberta and the Wallace Stegner House in (Eastend ), Saskatchewan in addition to grants and awards from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, British Columbia Arts Council, and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.〔
